U2 has received countless awards for their music. Their lead singer, Bono, has received almost as many awards for his social activism. On September 27th, Bono joined the ranks of Nelson Mandela, Bill Clinton, and Kofi Annan by being awarded the Philadelphia Liberty Metal. He received the award for his work with DATA (Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa), the advocacy organization he co-founded to combat poverty and disease in Africa. Bono is the first non-politician to receive the metal.
In his acceptance speech, Bono said that the award ceremony was a "great excuse to go back to Philadelphia." Philadelphia is the city where he launched the One Campaign, and it now has 2.4 million Americans signed up to fight for justice for the poorest of the poor.
The Philadelphia Liberty Medal was first given in 1989 and six former recipiencts of the Liberty Metal subsequently won the Nobel Peace Prize.
