Catie Curtis – Long Night Moon
Genre: Indie rock / Acoustic
Every now and then, I come across an artist that doesn’t write praise and worship songs, per se, doesn’t target churches in their touring, doesn’t even focus on the Christian market, yet is completely in line with the Christian faith and message, whether they realize it or not. Sometimes, these artists are also some of the most intensely talented people I’ve heard in a good while.
I ran across Catie Curtis’s song “People Look Around” on Pandora internet radio in my regular mix, and the song was one of those that you immediately leave what you’re doing and find out the name of. I’ve since listed to it a little over two dozen times, and it hasn’t gotten old yet. I dug up the album and thrilled to find out that the whole thing is not only musically sound, but really has a few good things to say.
“People Look Around” is almost political, but really spends the length of the song asking some really burning questions. It’s definitely my favorite song on the album. “Passing Through” is a close second, a song about blooming where you’re planted that gives a sense of purpose without actually being preachy. “Hey California” is a catchy song that’s basically about how cold it is in states that AREN’T California, but the warmth of the people there make up the difference. (One little side note… parents might object to the use of the word “Hell” in that song, but stick with me.) And last on my list of favorites, “New Flowers” is a great credo for parents, talking about the shift of priorities when you have kids, but also leaving a sense of hope in the imagery of spring.
I gotta get me some more of this girl’s music. She’s apparently been doing indie for some time (CatieCurtis.com has albums back to 1991) and if the rest are as good as this one, I may have to start reviewing the old albums in a special section I’ll have to call, “I must have been asleep when this came out” or something. |
