Fans of American Idol may be surprised to find that among the remaining ten singers on the show are four Christians. Jordin Sparks, Melinda Doolittle, Chris Sligh, and Phil Stacey each have either had their start singing in the church, attended Christian schools or have connections with the Gospel Music Association.
Jordin Sparks, age 17, has already toured twice with Michael W. Smith. Melinda Doolittle is a 1999 graduate of the Belmont University School of Music, and sang back up for Christian and mainstream artists like Jonny Lang, Aaron Neville, and CeCe Winans.
Chris is a former member (due to American Idol rules) of the Christian band called Half Past Forever. Chris grew up a child of missionaries, and was a member on the worship team at his church in Greenville South Carolina. Phil Stacey graduated with a degree in vocal performance from Lee University, and is currently attending Liberty University.
Each episode of American Idol this season has attracted between 26 to 37 million viewers.
